Our new trails do look and feel very new at the moment but it won't take long for them to settle in and smooth out.

After a while the new trails will take on a more natural look, be smoother and much more enjoyable for visitors with dogs. We hope you will come back and enjoy our trails again in the future.

Thanks for the comment which is very valid. The central belt of Glasgow/Edinburgh is the biggest blight the astronomy community have in Scotland. It is one of the reasons the Forest Park went for the designation to highlight the intrusive light issue. Our primary concern is that the local intrusive light does not get any worse.

I came up to the dark sky park last weekend and was a little disappointed to be honest.

I came on a moonless night and walked in to Loch Dee, well away from any light source whatsoever in order to try a star trails photograph. The disappointment came in the fact that there is a huge orange glow from the direction of Glasgow to the north. Looking up Sliver Flow from Loch Dee made the stars on the horizon quite invisible.

The rest of the sky was clear and quite magnificent, but this is not a venue for star trails photography because of Glasgow. I think I will have to go further north into the highlands next time.

Why is it that the 33 accepted native british trees don't include any conifers other than scots pine, which itself is unsuitable for red squirrels? Surely if the red squirrel is native, you'd expect the trees they do best in to be within the native list too?

Hi, sad to say that i've not been up to the park yet, hopefully i will travel up in the not too distant future...i'm very much into walking in the woods, we live in kent and have beautiful ancient woods but we cannot see the sky at night...keep nature as it should be..love and peace to all. stepping-lightly :-)

To be fully comprehensive, it is worth to tell that IDA also awarded the Dark Sky Park status to Hungary's Zselic National Park beside Galoway. Congratulations to both of them!

Hi there

The Deer Range has tours until the 3rd September (today). After this you can still go up to the fence and view the deer, but you can't get in to the range, until our Roaring Stags event from the 4th to the 9th October. Contact Galloway District on 01671 402420 for details.
The Wild Goat Park is always open for visits though.
